My name is Will Johnston and I am the founder/director of Avenue, a Los Angeles based dance training program committed to exploring the different facets of contemporary dance.

I have spent the last 10+ years as a professor of dance at Chapman University, the co-director/founder Entity Contemporary Dance, as well as a freelance artist both choreographing and performing in the commercial dance industry. I have found so much love and respect for the ways in which each of these communities have educated their respective artists and I wanted to create an opportunity for dancers to explore a method of training that celebrates each of them.

Avenue is a program that encompasses my absorbed perspective of dance with an academic, concert, and commercial point of view. Through dialogue / conversation, reflective writing, movement practice, and performance capture, avenue will create a space where these three mindsets can be explored together .

Avenue will spend four weeks exploring my personal selection of five different movement themes of contemporary dance all instructed by myself. Each week will start with Day 1 of conditioning, movement study, phrase learning, and conversation surrounding the theme of that respective week. Day 2 of the same week will visit conditioning again followed by a professionally captured, performance based execution of the material learned from Day 1. This footage will be given to all dancers at avenue to have a constant flow of material to visually gauge their progress. I am a firm believer in the exercise of both the body and the brain in dance and avenue will strive to deliver training that brings equal emphasis to both.
